Beautyin the Pot has all the staples of a good quality Chinese hot pot chain (which is to be expected as its from Singapore's Paradise Group). The restaurant was buzzing but not raucous (in Mandarin we would say 'renao') with pleasant chatter and scented steam emanating from each table. As I sat down, I ticked off my mental hot pot check list.
The Place After opening two outlets at OneKM Mall and The Centrepoint, one of the most popular hotpot restaurants in Singapore Beauty in the Pot opened its third and largest outlet just a week ago Check out what are some of our other favourite hotpot restaurants in town. Coincidentally, the newest outlet of the perpetually packed steamboat restaurant is also located at OneKM Mall, on Level 3 with a very spacious size of over 7,600 square feet and 288 seats. The first thing I notice about the newest outlet is the predominantly pink interior. The interior such as the walls and ceiling take reference from cherry blossoms during spring season, while the restaurant’s flooring features white marble stippled with pink quartz. This feels like a new outlet specially designed for the ladies! In addition, there are also private rooms available with individual pots, which reminds me of the concept at Paradise Hotpot in Compass One. The other ambitious plan in the pipeline is a children’s playground at the outdoor area. The Food The main difference for this outlet other than its ridiculously pink interior as opposed to the one on level 2 in the same mall is that it will serve six soup bases, similar to The Centrepoint’s outlet, including the Beauty Collagen Broth Shark’s Cartilage Soup, Longevity Wild Pine Mushroom Broth Vegetarian, Spicy Nourishing Broth Pork Bone Soup, Vitamin C Tomato Sweet Corn Broth, Herbal Drunken Chicken Broth and Cooling Coconut Broth. The price of a single pot starts from S$14; a quart pot starts from S$5 each. Even though my favourite broths remain the Beauty Collagen and Spicy Nourishing, the Cooling Coconut Broth is quite clear and refreshing as it contains coconut flesh from young coconut. Some of my favourite dishes to order whenever I visit the restaurant is the Fried Beancurd Skin S$ S$ Signature Homemade Fish Tofu S$2/piece and Soft Bone Pork Meatballs S$5/half portion; S$10/full. As usual, there is also an option to top up S$ for the condiments and fresh fruits. Rants The whole interior being pink is very feminine, vastly different from the strong oriental look of the outlet at level 2 in the same mall. Perhaps pink is the new black? Will I Return Again? Beauty in The Pot remains my favourite steamboat restaurant in Singapore, even after trying the famous ones in Taipei as a benchmark. To nibble on was the crispy egg salted fish skin which are so addictive. The noodles go well in the spicy soup and they have a nice chew to it. We’re hoping that our skin texture will become more “taong” vibrant after our meal here! To enjoy further savings, we headed to Beauty in the Pot after 10pm. This is because, after 10pm daily, you’ll be able to enjoy 20% off food ingredients. Do note that this excludes soup bases, condiments and drinks. Still, a 20% discount? Why not? 😄 Beauty in the Pot 美滋锅 Menu and Soup Bases Beauty in the Pot Soup Base Selection The first step of dining at hotpot restaurants is the selection of the broth. At Beauty in the Pot, there are 6 different soup bases to choose from extracted from Beauty in the Pot Menu Beauty Collagen Broth 胶原蛋白养颜美容锅 “More than eight hours of hard work goes into the making of this dense and collagen-rich soup. Freshly prepared every day, meticulous attention is devoted to maintaining the quality of soup. Experience the richness of beauty contained in every sip.” Spicy Nourishing Broth Pork Bone Soup 滋补养生香辣锅猪骨汤 “Relish in the essence of herbs lavished in this Spicy Nourishing Broth, with an extra boost for immunity and energy. Simmered for long hours, the pork bone broth contains luxurious Chinese herbs including red dates, wolfberries, ginseng, dang gui, dang shen and more. Flavoured with Szechuan chilli oil, savour the unparalleled intensity of spice and herbs in each pot.” Vitamin C Tomato Sweet Corn Broth 维他命C番茄玉米锅 “Tomatoes are not only an excellent source of vitamin C, but also packed full of other antioxidants and several nutrients that are highly beneficial for health. Delightfully pleasing to the taste buds and smooth to the throat, this revitalising Cooling Coconut Broth is the perfect accompaniment of a wholesome feast.” Herbal Drunken Chicken Broth 养生药膳醉鸡锅 “Simmered over slow-fire for at least two hours and using only fresh Kampong chicken coupled with an array of premium herbs and tonics such as solomon’s seal, codonopsis root, Chinese angelica root and many more, this is a heavenly dish rich in luxurious herbal fragrance and taste. This Herbal Drunken Chicken Broth is not only delicious in taste, but also aids in improving blood circulation and strengthening one’s immunity, definitely a broth that pleases all.” This time, we went with the Quart option, having 3 different soup types. The 4th will be filled with water. In this way, you can taste 3 different soup broths at a cheaper rate as compared to a single pot. We chose Beauty Collagen Broth $ Spicy Nourishing Broth $ and the Herbal Drunken Chicken Broth $ which is cheaper than going for a whole pot of Beauty Collagen Broth at $ Beauty in the Pot Menu For the selection of ingredients, it is done by the touchscreen pad provided by Beauty in the Pot. We found the platters to be rather good options. Moreover, Hai Di Lao does have the 20% discount after 10pm as well – albeit only at selected outlets which are mostly located in town. What We Had at Beauty in the Pot 美滋锅 Beauty in the Pot Condiments Section The sauce we concocted from the condiments section of Beauty in the Pot Side dishes from Beauty in the Pot After ordering, it was time to head to the condiment section to get our sauces and the side dishes available. In the condiments department, we have to say that Hai Di Lao trumps Beauty in the Pot slightly. In terms of condiments selection, HDL has a wider selection and the side dish options were better. During our visit, there was only 1 decent side dish – the seaweed but at HDL you’ll be able to have selections such as beancurd skin and even mushrooms. Lastly, at HDL, if you order the drinks, it comes with dessert options of beancurd, ice cream etc which is another option that beats Beauty in the Pot from the condiments perspective. Beauty in the Pot Collagen Herbal Chicken and Spicy Pork Broth with Signature Fish Tofu and La Mian Beauty in the Pot – Top Up of Soup / Broth Beauty in the Pot Beef Platter In the taste department, we have to say that Beauty in the Pot wins Hai Di Lao hands down. The Beauty Collagen Broth was just so good. Rich, creamy and not so salty. You can be satisfied with the soup just by itself. No need for meats to be cooked within for the broth to be “sweetened”. The signature fish tofu was as good as advertised. Fresh with the melt-in-your-mouth texture. On the other hand, we also enjoyed the signature mashed prawn from Hai Di Lao – though it was comparatively more expensive. Lastly, the portion of the beef platter was generous included US Wagyu Beef, US Angus Prime Short Ribs, Sliced US Beef, US Marbled Beef Cube and though we only ordered this meat platter, we were very much satisfied by the end of the meal. Not to be mistaken for your usual steamboat fare, Beauty In The Pot’s menu offers so much more than a classic, family-heartwarming meal. Inspired by the culture of food for health, this hotpot concept offers nourishing soup bases that are collagen-based yes ladies, you heard me that promise rich flavours coupled with abundant benefits. The cosy interior of Beauty in the pot exudes a sense of warmth, but still bordering on the whole casual dining feel. Inspired by the concept of Yin and Yang, they have managed to achieve a balance of a dark ambience complete with enough natural lighting. However, this Yin Yang inspiration does not just stop at their cosy interior design. It extends to their hotpot culture as well, offering the yin yang soup bases, the Beauty Collagen Broth and the Spicy Nourishing Broth $25 served conjointly, $20 each served separately, which complement your meal perfectly. Not to forget, refills are free flow as well! Both comprising of shark cartilage as the main ingredient, more than six hours of hard work goes into the making of the robust and collagen-rich broths. The Spicy Nourishing Broth even uses chinese herbs like red dates, wolf berries, ginseng, dang gui and dang shen, complete with 3 levels of Szechuan chilli oil to create an invigorating Mala sensation that leaves you dying for a cup of water. But come on, what is steamboat without its prime ingredients right? Offering quality ingredients that are made from scratch by hand, Beauty In A Pot does not seem to compromise on its ingredients, sourcing for the best experience for their customers as much as possible. Even so, each table is served attentively by their experienced in-house hotpot masters, introducing each dish and the soups and helping whenever necessary. Starting of with the Fried Beancurd Skin $3 for half portions, Paradise group made a good impression on us already. Dipping the skins into the tasty soup, they managed a balance of crispiness and a taste of their signature broth without presenting a soggy beancurd skin, which I really appreciated. Sliced US Short Ribs $8 We tried half portions of their US Wagyu Ribeye $21, and the Sliced US Short Ribs $8. The meat was sufficiently thinly sliced, and were well marbled, signifying good quality. The US Kurobuta Pork $9 was also fulfilling, thinly layered with jellied fats. Their Red Garoupa $28 small was also very fresh, perfectly suitable for the steamboat meal. Full portions are also available, at double the price. We also tried other interesting concoctions on their extensive menu, including the Homemade Fish Tofu $ per piece, which tasted nothing much like tofu but instead, authentic soft yellowtail fish paste. It was a pleasant addition to our meal, and added different textures to our palate. The collagen soup seeped and was well integrated into the fish tofu, making it very soft and juicy, very much like biting into a homemade fishbowl laden with soup juices. We also tried many of their Specialty Homemade Paste, which I really loved, including additions such as the dried scallop fish $12, century egg $10 and ebiko prawn paste $12. My favourite was the Ebiko Prawn Paste, as with the tiny ebiko bits mixed with the paste, it provided a very interesting texture and taste to the whole side dish. Originating from its fishball paste predecessor, I can say that this creative innovation is definitely a success. All their pastes would absorb the soup very well, making it juicy yet springy at the same time. We also managed to try out Beauty In A Pot’s range of meatballs in their Assorted Balls Platter $10, including favourites such as the soft bone pork meat ball, fish balls, mushroom balls and cuttlefish balls. Handmade in-stall daily, there is a distinct difference between theirs and any assorted fish balls you find in most steamboat outlets in Singapore. With a much softer and semi- springy texture, their range of meatballs stand out from the crowd, and would certainly be a crowd pleaser. Again, priding themselves on quality handmade ingredients, Beauty in A Pot chooses to painstakingly fold the dumplings in-house as well. The dumplings managed to absorb juices from the soup broth well, allowing for a soupy, wanton finish. We had their Assorted Dumplings Platter Pork Roll, Pork and Chives, Prawn Roll and Prawn Dumpling for $10. Not forgetting their sauce bar, comprising of many special sauces for customers to create their own individual blend of sauces to cater to each and every need. We tried Beauty in A Pot’s signature blend of the shacha sauce, sesame sauce, light soya sauce and chilli oil. Go wild and create your own customized sauces limited only by your imagination and stomach strength. Beauty in the Pot even offers complimentary palate cleansers after the meal. Overall, the whole experience was a great one, and I would definitely recommend this steamboat joint to anyone looking for a satisfying, hearty meal that’s healthy too with all the collagen used. The only caution that some readers might want to take note of is the use of Shark’s cartilage as their collagen source, which might not be agreeable to some.
